Atalaya Golf

Atalaya Golf has been part of the Estepona landscape since 1968, which makes it one of the older established courses on the western Costa del Sol. The Old Course was laid out by German architect Bernhard von Limburger, and more than half a century later it still carries his mark. This is a parkland design that rewards placement over power, threaded through mature trees on gently sloping ground. The course measures 6,405 metres to a par of 72, with a rating of 74.3 and a slope of 137. Those numbers tell you most of what you need to know. It looks benign and plays harder than it looks.

The von Limburger Open Championship has been hosted here every year for over 25 years, which gives the club a steady competitive identity rather than a one-off tournament credential. That kind of longevity counts in a region where new courses arrive every few years and reputations shift quickly. Atalaya built its standing slowly, through repetition and through the members who keep coming back.

The clubhouse was refurbished in 2019 and now does more than serve as a halfway stop. There is a bar and restaurant, an outdoor terrace looking across the Old Course, and a gymnasium that was added in 2013. One quieter detail is worth flagging. The roof of the on-site café forms the first tee, an unusual piece of layout that you tend to notice only after your second or third visit. The building is practical rather than ornate, which suits the tone of the place.

Practice facilities sit at the centre of what Atalaya does now. The PG Golf and Sports Academy runs a driving range with 52 bays, 44 of them fitted with TrackMan technology, which puts the teaching setup well ahead of most courses in the area. There is a putting green, a chipping area with bunkers, a dedicated short game zone, and a full-length practice hole for players working on full-shot routines under real conditions. Anyone serious about lowering a handicap will find that useful, as will a buyer with children who play competitively.

Access is semi-private, so visitor green fees run alongside the membership programme. Buggy hire is roughly 38 euros, and some unlimited golf packages include a 10 per cent discount on buggy rentals. The arrangement gives non-members reliable tee-time access without thinning out the club atmosphere. It also fits how many residents actually use a home course. A few rounds a week in season, guests in tow during the summer, and the odd tournament scattered through the year.

Atalaya sits between Estepona and San Pedro de Alcántara, on the inland side of the coastal corridor running west from Marbella. For property buyers, this stretch has its own character. It is quieter than the Marbella core, well served by the A-7 and AP-7, and within easy reach of both Estepona town and the marina at Puerto Banús. Mountain views sit behind the course, and the Mediterranean is a few minutes south. Schools, supermarkets, healthcare and restaurants are all close enough that a home here does not force the compromises of a more remote rural setting. A long-established course with serious practice facilities and semi-private access tends to support property values nearby, and new-build homes within a short drive of Atalaya benefit from a venue that has run consistently since 1968.
