Hospital Costa del Sol has been the main public hospital on the western Málaga coast since 1993. It is run by the Andalusian regional health service and covers a wide area, taking in Marbella, Estepona, Manilva, Casares, Benahavís, Istán and Ojén. The population it serves grows sharply in summer with seasonal residents and visitors. For more than thirty years it has been the first call when something serious happens between Málaga city and the Gibraltar frontier.

Holiday-home owners think first about beaches, golf and restaurants. Full-time and semi-permanent residents soon learn to think about emergency rooms, maternity wards and cancer treatment. A house twenty minutes from a 24-hour emergency department behaves very differently from one an hour away on mountain roads. Insurance, retirement plans and the question of staying put as you age all rest on this single piece of infrastructure.

Hospital Costa del Sol, together with the private clinics that have grown around it, is part of the reason the Marbella to Estepona stretch works as a year-round place to live rather than a summer resort. Buyers weighing up locations from the eastern edge of Marbella through Benahavís and into Estepona are choosing within the catchment of a hospital that has treated this coast since 1993. It is a practical point. On the Costa del Sol the practical points are often what separate a good purchase from one you come to regret.
